Automatic Feeder Problems: Jams, Missed Meals, and Fixes

Common automatic pet feeder problems solved: jamming, missed meals, app issues, and pet break-ins.

A feeder that worked fine for months and suddenly misbehaves usually has a mechanical cause: buildup, kibble change, or a dying battery. Work through these before replacing the unit.

Feeder jams and misses meals

Empty the hopper and check for oversized or broken kibble pieces wedged in the mechanism. Clean out dust and crumbs with a dry brush. If you recently changed food, the new kibble shape may be the cause; revert or choose a feeder with anti-clog design. Never use wet or semi-moist food in a dispenser.

Portions are inconsistent

Volumetric dispensers vary with kibble size and hopper fullness; a nearly empty hopper dispenses slightly less per cycle. Keep the hopper at least a quarter full. For precision, weigh the dispensed portion on a kitchen scale and adjust the programmed amount to compensate.

Pet broke into the feeder

Upgrade to a feeder with a twist-lock or latched lid, and place the unit against a wall so it cannot be tipped. For persistent offenders, put the feeder in a room the pet accesses only at mealtimes via a door or gate. Remove the desiccant bag if the pet is chewing components.

App won't connect (Wi-Fi feeders)

Confirm your phone is on a 2.4GHz network during pairing; most feeders cannot see 5GHz. Move the feeder closer to the router for setup, then relocate it. If the app lost the device after working, power-cycle the feeder and re-add it. As a fallback, program the schedule on the unit's panel so feeding continues regardless.

Questions, answered

How often should I clean the feeder?

Wash the hopper and bowl every 2 to 4 weeks with warm soapy water, and wipe the dispensing mechanism with a dry cloth. Kibble oils go rancid and impede smooth operation if neglected.

The feeder stopped working after a power outage

Check whether your model has battery backup and whether the batteries are fresh; dead backup batteries are the usual cause. Reprogram the clock after any full power loss, since missed schedules often trace to a reset clock.
