How we chose
We judged arms on four things. Weight capacity must match your monitor with margin; an arm at its limit sags and drifts. Range of motion covers height, tilt, swivel, and rotation, plus how far the arm reaches and folds. Adjustment feel separates premium gas springs from stiff budget joints; you will feel the difference every day. Build quality and mounting covers materials, clamp security, desk compatibility, and cable management.
Questions, answered
What is VESA and why does it matter?
VESA is the standard mounting-hole pattern on the back of monitors, usually 75x75 or 100x100 mm for desktop displays. Your arm and monitor must share a VESA pattern, or you need an adapter. All the arms here support the common 75 and 100 mm patterns.
Will a monitor arm work with my desk?
Most arms clamp to desks between about 0.4 and 3.3 inches thick, or mount through a grommet hole. Glass desks and very thin desktops may need reinforcement. Check your desk thickness against the arm's clamp range before buying.
Can a monitor arm hold an ultrawide?
Only arms rated for the weight and width. Heavy 34-inch ultrawides exceed many standard arms' capacity and leverage limits. Check both the weight rating and the maximum screen size, and when in doubt choose the heavier-duty arm.
Do monitor arms damage desks?
Clamp arms can dent soft desktops over time. Using the included padding and not overtightening prevents most damage. For expensive desks, a grommet mount or a reinforcing plate spreads the load.
