How we chose
Capacity vs weight
Milliamp-hours tell you how much energy a bank holds, but weight tells you whether you will actually carry it. A 24,000 mAh bank holds more than twice the energy of a 10,000 mAh bank and weighs roughly twice as much. Match capacity to trip length, not to the biggest number.
Wattage
Wattage determines what a bank can charge. Phones need 18 to 30 W, tablets around 30 W, ultrabooks 45 to 65 W, and larger laptops 90 W or more. A bank with huge capacity but low wattage will charge a laptop slowly or not at all.
Airline limits
Most airlines allow power banks up to 100 Wh in carry-on baggage without special approval, and forbid them in checked baggage entirely. Check the Wh rating printed on the bank itself; capacity in mAh alone does not tell you the Wh figure.
Ports and extras
Count your devices: one USB-C port is enough for a phone, but laptop plus phone plus earbuds wants two or more. A display, passthrough charging, and included cables are genuine quality-of-life features on banks you use daily.
Questions, answered
How many phone charges do I get from 10,000 mAh?
Roughly one and a half to two full charges for a modern phone, after conversion losses. Advertised capacity is measured at the internal battery voltage, and some energy is always lost as heat during charging, so real-world output is lower than the printed number.
Can I bring a power bank on a plane?
Yes, in carry-on baggage only, never in checked baggage. Most airlines allow banks up to 100 Wh without approval. Between 100 and 160 Wh usually needs airline permission, and above 160 Wh is prohibited. Check the Wh rating printed on your bank.
Does a bigger mAh number charge faster?
No. Capacity (mAh) is how much energy the bank holds; wattage (W) is how fast it delivers it. A 10,000 mAh bank with 65 W output charges a phone faster than a 24,000 mAh bank with 18 W output.
What is passthrough charging?
Passthrough charging lets the bank charge your devices while the bank itself recharges from the wall. It is useful as a nightstand hub, but it generates extra heat, so occasional use is fine and constant use will wear the battery faster.
