Our verdict

The Precision Brewer is the most capable drip machine for tinkerers: 6 brew modes and PID temperature control genuinely expand what drip coffee can do. But simplicity-seekers should look at the Technivorm Moccamaster because it brews an equally good standard pot with one switch, a smaller footprint, and a repairable build, and value buyers should look at the OXO Brew 9-Cup because its SCA-certified brewing costs significantly less.

What we like

  • Six brew modes: Gold, Fast, Strong, Pour Over, Cold Brew, and custom My Brew.
  • PID temperature control adjustable from 197 to 204 degrees F for dialing in extraction.
  • Dual filter baskets (flat and cone) adapt to different coffee styles.
  • 60-oz double-wall thermal carafe keeps large batches hot without a plate.

What to watch out for

  • The learning curve is real: most owners use two modes and ignore the rest.
  • Large footprint for a 12-cup machine.
  • Cold brew mode still takes hours, like any immersion method.

Who it is for

Coffee enthusiasts who enjoy experimenting with brew parameters and want one machine for drip, pour-over style, and cold brew.

Design and build

Breville's fit and finish is excellent: stainless accents, a clear LCD, and both flat-bottom and cone baskets in the box. It is the largest machine in this guide, so measure your counter. The thermal carafe version is the one to get.

Brewing performance

Gold mode delivers an SCA-certified cup on par with the Moccamaster. The real story is the other modes: Fast brews a decent pot in a hurry, Strong extends contact time, and Cold Brew steeps overnight. PID temperature adjustment lets you tune extraction for light roasts.

Ease of use and value

The LCD walks you through modes clearly, but there is undeniably more to learn than a one-switch brewer. Descaling reminders help maintenance. You pay a premium for the versatility; if you will only ever use Gold mode, the Moccamaster is simpler.

How it stacks up

Against the Technivorm Moccamaster, the Breville matches its SCA-certified cup quality in Gold mode while adding 5 more modes, PID temperature control, and a programmable timer the Moccamaster lacks; the tradeoff is a larger footprint, more complexity, and a less serviceable design. Against the OXO Brew 9-Cup, the Breville offers deeper control and a 12-cup capacity versus 9, but costs substantially more for brewing that tastes similar in standard mode.

Questions, answered

Is the cold brew mode any good?

It is a slow-steep mode that produces a reasonable concentrate overnight. It will not match a dedicated cold brew tower, but it is genuinely useful.

Can it make a single cup?

Yes, with the included cone basket and the single-cup setting, though like all drip machines it brews best at half capacity or more.

How does it compare to the Moccamaster?

Brew quality in Gold mode is comparable. The Breville adds modes, temperature control, and a timer; the Moccamaster is simpler, faster, and more repairable.
