Desk Lamp Not Working? Common Fixes (2026)
Fix the most common desk lamp problems: dead LEDs, flickering, unresponsive touch controls, and loose arms.
Most lamp problems are power, bulb, or connection issues. Work through these before replacing the lamp.
Lamp will not turn on at all
Test the outlet with another device, then check the lamp's power adapter and cable for damage. For replaceable-bulb lamps like the Tertial, try a known-good bulb; for integrated LEDs, try a different outlet and inspect the adapter brick for swelling or heat damage.
LED lamp flickers or strobes
Flicker at low brightness often means the dimmer circuit is struggling; raise the brightness a notch to test. If flicker persists at all levels, the LED driver is likely failing, which on integrated-LED lamps usually means replacement. Check for firmware updates on smart lamps first.
Touch controls stopped responding
Unplug the lamp for 60 seconds to reset the control board, then wipe the touch panel with a dry cloth; skin oils and dust cause false or missed touches. If one specific function (color, brightness) fails while others work, the capacitive sensor for that zone may be worn.
Arm or gooseneck will not stay in position
On articulated arms like the Tertial, tighten the wing nuts and joint screws; springs can be re-tensioned by adjusting the anchor points. On goosenecks, the metal fatigue is usually permanent after years of use, but rotating the neck to an unused bend axis can buy more time.
Questions, answered
Can I replace the LEDs in an integrated lamp?
Generally no; integrated LED arrays are soldered assemblies. This is the core trade-off of LED lamps versus replaceable-bulb designs like the Tertial.
Why does my smart lamp keep disconnecting?
Usually Wi-Fi or Bluetooth range, or a crowded 2.4 GHz band. Move the lamp closer to the router or Bridge, and keep it on 2.4 GHz networks, which most smart lamps require.
