Dog Bed Problems: Why Your Dog Won't Use It

Common dog bed problems solved: dogs ignoring the bed, flattening foam, smell, and sizing mistakes.

A dog ignoring a new bed is almost never about the bed's quality. It is about placement, shape mismatch, or smell. Work through these fixes before buying another bed.

Dog won't use the new bed

Move the bed to where the dog already sleeps; dogs choose location over bedding. Put a worn t-shirt of yours on it for familiar scent, and reward the dog with treats for settling on it. Give it two weeks. If the dog curls and the bed is flat (or sprawls and the bed is a donut), the shape is wrong and no amount of training fixes that.

Foam has flattened where the dog sleeps

Rotate the bed 180 degrees weekly to distribute wear. If the foam does not spring back within an hour of the dog getting up, the foam is done; budget foam lasts 2 to 3 years. Next time, buy thicker foam or a brand with a flattening warranty like Big Barker.

Bed smells despite washing

Wash the cover in hot water with an enzymatic pet-odor detergent, not regular laundry soap. Sprinkle baking soda on the foam, leave it for several hours, then vacuum it off. If odor persists in the foam itself, the foam is saturated and needs replacing; covers can only do so much.

Dog chews the bed

Remove the bed until chewing is under control; ingested filling can cause intestinal blockages. Increase daily exercise and provide appropriate chew toys. When reintroducing, choose a flat bed with no bolsters or seams to target, and supervise. Persistent destructive chewing warrants a vet check for anxiety.

Questions, answered

Should I force my dog onto the bed?

No. Forcing creates negative associations. Lure with treats, place the bed in a preferred spot, and let the dog choose. Most dogs adopt a comfortable bed within two weeks.

Why does my dog prefer the floor?

Usually heat: thick beds trap warmth and some dogs run hot. Try a thinner bed or a raised cot with airflow underneath. In summer, even bed-loving dogs often choose cool tile.
