Gaming Headset Not Working? Fixes That Actually Help

Gaming headset problems and fixes: no sound, mic not working, wireless dropouts, and crackling audio.

Most headset issues are settings or connection problems, not broken hardware. Work through these before considering a replacement.

No sound at all

Check the headset is set as the default output device in your OS and game. On wireless models, confirm the dongle is seated and the headset is charged and powered on. Try a different USB port, avoiding hubs.

Microphone not working

Verify the mic is unmuted (hardware switch and software), set as default input, and granted permission in OS privacy settings. Detachable mics must click fully into place; retractable mics must be extended.

Wireless dropouts or crackling

Move the dongle closer with a USB extension cable and away from Wi-Fi routers and USB 3 ports, which cause interference. Update firmware via the manufacturer's app, and lower the polling rate if the option exists.

Game and chat audio mixed wrong

Set the game output to the headset's game channel and chat apps to the chat channel where supported. On consoles, adjust the chat/game balance in system audio settings or on the headset's mixer dial.

Questions, answered

Why does my headset work in Discord but not in-game?

Games and chat apps can select different devices. Set both to the headset explicitly rather than leaving them on system default.

Should I update headset firmware?

Yes, when the manufacturer offers it. Firmware updates fix connectivity bugs and sometimes improve mic processing. Use the official app, not third-party tools.
