Immersion Blender Not Working? Fixes for Common Problems

Why your immersion blender sticks, splatters, leaves chunks, or won't start, and the fix for each.

Immersion blender problems are almost always technique or maintenance, not failure. These fixes cover the issues that bring most owners to a search engine.

Blender suctions itself to the pot bottom

Keep the head moving in slow circles and tilt it slightly so liquid flows through the bell. Do not press it flat against the bottom. Anti-suction bell designs (Breville) resist this; with flat-bell models, constant gentle motion is the fix.

Soup splatters everywhere

The head was not fully submerged when you switched on. Submerge completely first, start on the lowest speed, and keep it below the surface until you switch off. Tilt the head to create a vortex rather than lifting it.

Leaves chunks no matter how long I blend

Move the head slowly through the entire pot instead of holding it in one spot; stationary blending recirculates the same liquid. For fibrous vegetables, blend 2 to 3 full minutes, then strain. If chunks persist with a low-wattage model on hard ingredients, the motor is underpowered for the task.

Won't start or stops mid-blend

Check that the shaft is fully locked into the motor body; most models have a safety interlock. If it stopped mid-blend, the thermal protector tripped: unplug, wait 15 minutes, and resume with a lighter load. If it never starts, test the outlet and check for a tripped GFCI.

Questions, answered

Why does it smell hot?

Extended high-speed blending, especially on thick mixtures, overheats the motor. Stop, let it cool, and work in shorter bursts. A persistent burning smell means failing windings; retire the unit.

Can I sharpen the blade?

No. Immersion blender blades are not user-sharpenable. If performance has degraded and cleaning does not restore it, the blade assembly needs replacement.
