Keyboard Switch Problems: Fixes That Actually Work

Fix unresponsive switches, key chatter, spring ping, and stem wobble with practical, tested solutions.

Most switch problems have mechanical causes and mechanical fixes. Work through these in order before replacing switches.

A key does not register at all

On a hot-swap board, pull the switch and check for bent pins, the most common cause. Straighten gently with tweezers and reseat firmly. If pins are fine, test the switch in a different socket: if it works there, the socket is the problem; if not, the switch's contacts are dead and it needs replacing. On soldered boards, reflow the solder joints before assuming the switch failed.

Key chatter: one press registers twice

Chatter is usually dirty or worn contacts. First try compressed air and working the key rapidly 50+ times to clear debris. If it persists, the contact leaves are worn or contaminated; on hot-swap boards, replace the switch. For soldered boards, desoldering one switch is far cheaper than replacing the keyboard. Persistent chatter across many keys can indicate a failing controller rather than the switches.

Spring ping or metallic ringing

Ping comes from the spring resonating, most audible on dry stock switches. The proper fix is lubricating the spring: remove it, apply a thin coat of switch lube (Krytox 105 or 205g0), and reinstall. The quick mitigation is a desk mat and a case with foam, which dampen resonance without opening switches. Pre-lubed switches like the Milky Yellow Pro rarely ping out of the bag.

Excessive stem wobble

Some wobble is normal on MX-style switches; north-south wobble under ~0.5 mm is typical. If a switch wobbles dramatically more than its neighbors, the top housing may be loose: try swapping the top housing with a spare. Switch films, thin adhesive shims placed between the top and bottom housings, tighten the fit and slightly deepen the sound. If most switches in a batch wobble badly, it is a tolerance issue with that batch, not something films fully fix.

Questions, answered

Can a dead switch be repaired?

Sometimes. Bent pins can be straightened, and dirty contacts can be cleaned with contact cleaner. But switches are consumable parts costing well under a dollar each in bulk; if cleaning does not fix it in ten minutes, replace it. Your time is worth more than the switch.

Why do my switches feel scratchy after months of use?

Factory lube migrates and dries over time, especially on heavily used keys like spacebar and E. This is normal wear. Relubing restores smoothness, or replace the worst offenders with fresh switches from your spares.
