Laptop Stand Problems and Fixes (2026)

Common laptop stand problems: wobbling, slipping, wrong height, and laptop fit issues, with practical fixes.

Laptop stands are simple devices, and their problems are simple too. Most issues come down to stability, fit, or height. Here are the common ones and how to fix each.

The stand wobbles while typing

First, check that all hinges or joints are fully locked; folding stands wobble most when a detent is not engaged. Make sure the stand sits on a flat, hard surface, since soft desk mats amplify movement. If a fixed stand wobbles, check for missing rubber feet. Persistent wobble with a heavy laptop usually means the stand is undersized for the machine.

The laptop slides off the stand

Verify the front lip is actually catching the laptop's front edge; some lips are too short for thick laptops. Clean the rubber pads, since dust reduces grip. If the stand has adjustable width arms, narrow them so the laptop sits snugly. As a last resort, adhesive rubber bumpers on the stand add grip cheaply.

The height is wrong for my desk

For adjustable stands, work through the height settings systematically rather than guessing; small changes matter. If a fixed stand is too low, it cannot be fixed, which is why measuring eye level before buying matters. A stand that is too high can sometimes be improved with a lower chair or a keyboard tray.

The stand does not fit my 17-inch laptop

Large laptops need stands rated for their size. Check the manufacturer's compatibility range; many compact stands top out at 15 or 16 inches. For 17-inch machines, prefer wide-base desk stands with high weight ratings. Using an undersized stand risks both instability and the laptop tipping.

Questions, answered

Why does my folding stand collapse?

The locking mechanism is not fully engaged. Open the stand deliberately until each hinge clicks into its detent. If it still collapses under normal weight, the mechanism is worn or defective and the stand should be replaced.

Can I fix a bent aluminum stand?

Minor bends can sometimes be straightened carefully by hand, but aluminum work-hardens and may crack. If the bend affects stability, replacement is safer than repair.
