Milk Frother Not Working? Fixes (2026)
Milk frother problems solved: no foam, burnt milk, whisk not spinning, and burnt smells.
Most frother failures are milk choice, fill level, or residue buildup. Run through these before assuming the motor is dead.
Milk is hot but not foamy
You are likely over the frothing max line: foam needs headroom to expand, so fill only to the lower frothing mark, never the heating mark. Cold milk also foams dramatically better than warm; start from the fridge. And check the milk itself: ultra-pasteurized and low-protein milks foam poorly in every frother, so try a different milk before blaming the machine.
Milk tastes burnt or scorched
Residue from the last use is baking onto the heating element: soak the jug in warm soapy water immediately after use going forward, and descale monthly with a vinegar solution in hard-water areas. Sugary creamers and chocolate milk scorch faster than plain milk, so they need immediate rinsing without exception. If scorching is new on a previously fine unit, the thermostat may be failing.
Whisk is not spinning
On jug frothers, the magnetic whisk often just needs reseating: lift it out, rinse off any milk film breaking the magnetic coupling, and drop it back centered. On handhelds, weak spinning means dying batteries; replace them before assuming motor failure. If the whisk spins freely by hand but not under power, the motor or drive is the problem and it is usually not worth repairing on a budget unit.
Frother smells like burning or shuts off mid-cycle
Unplug it immediately and let it cool: the thermal cutoff tripped, usually from running it empty or with too little milk. Never run a frother dry; the minimum fill line exists to protect the heating element. If it trips with proper fill levels, residue insulation on the element is the likely cause, so descale thoroughly. Repeated tripping after descaling means the thermostat is failing.
Questions, answered
Why did my frother stop working after months of fine use?
Almost always limescale or milk-stone buildup on the heating element and sensors, especially in hard-water areas. A monthly vinegar descale prevents most of these deaths.
Can I put the whole frother in the dishwasher?
Only if the manufacturer says so. The Aeroccino 4 is fully dishwasher safe; the Breville's jug is but its base is not; handheld motor bodies must never be submerged. When in doubt, hand wash.
