Panini Press Not Working? Fixes for the Common Problems (2026)
Press will not heat, sandwiches stick, uneven browning: the common panini press problems and how to fix each.
Most panini press problems are heat or nonstick problems. Work through these before replacing the machine.
The press will not heat up
Check that it is fully plugged in and the temperature dial is set above minimum; some models have a separate power switch that is easy to miss. If the indicator light never comes on, try a different outlet. A dead heating element on a sealed budget press usually means replacement.
Sandwiches stick to the plates
The nonstick is likely worn or was overheated empty. Lightly oil the bread rather than the plates, which protects the coating. For worn plates, there is no real fix on a sealed unit: this is the most common reason budget presses get replaced. Hand washing and avoiding metal utensils prevent it.
Uneven browning: burnt ridges, pale valleys
This is typical of thin ribbed plates running too hot. Lower the temperature and press a little longer, which evens out the heat. Make sure the sandwich sits centered and the lid closes evenly; an off-center sandwich browns off-center.
Cheese leaks out and burns onto the plates
Keep cheese a half inch from the edges and do not overfill. Do not force the lid on a thick sandwich; a floating hinge with proper clearance presses without squeezing. For burnt-on cheese, lay a damp cloth on the warm plate for a minute to steam it loose, then wipe.
Questions, answered
Can I fix a scratched nonstick plate?
Not really. Nonstick sprays and re-coating kits exist but do not last on high-heat press plates. On machines with removable plates like the Griddler, replacement plates are sometimes available. On sealed budget presses, scratched plates mean it is time to replace.
Why does my press smoke?
Usually burnt residue on the plates or oil heated past its smoke point. Clean the plates, use an oil suited to the temperature, and never preheat the press empty on high. Persistent smoking from inside the housing means an electrical problem: unplug it and stop using it.
