iRobot Roomba j7+ Review (2026)
Roomba j7+ review: self-empty base, PrecisionVision obstacle avoidance, and pet hair pickup assessed, with a clear verdict and alternatives.

iRobot Roomba j7+
Pet-waste avoidance guarantee, self-empty included.
Our verdict
The Roomba j7+ is the safest pick for pet owners and the easiest robot to live with thanks to its self-empty base. iRobot's obstacle avoidance was built around the realities of pet homes, and the software experience is the most polished in the category. It gives up mopping to the Roborock S8, but for pure vacuuming convenience it is outstanding.
What we like
- Self-empty base included
- P.O.O.P. pet waste avoidance promise
- Smart mapping with keep-out zones
What to watch out for
- No mopping
- Suction trails Roborock flagships
- Replacement bags are an ongoing cost
Who it is for
Best for pet owners and anyone who wants the most hands-off vacuuming experience with the least app fiddling.
Cleaning performance
iRobot rates the j7+ at 10x the suction of its 600-series baseline, and the dual rubber brush rolls are excellent at resisting tangles from pet hair. Edge cleaning and corner pickup are solid, and the dirt-detect sensors spend extra passes on heavily soiled areas.
Obstacle avoidance
PrecisionVision navigation uses a front camera to identify and avoid obstacles, most famously pet waste, with iRobot backing it with a replacement promise. In practice it also steers around cords, shoes, and socks better than robots without camera-based avoidance.
Self-empty base and app
The Clean Base automatically empties the robot's bin into a bag you replace every couple of months. The iRobot app offers smart mapping, keep-out zones, and room-specific schedules, and it is simpler to learn than Roborock's deeper app. Note the j7+ does not mop.

Questions, answered
Does the Roomba j7+ really avoid pet waste?
iRobot designed PrecisionVision specifically for this and backs it with a promise to replace the robot if it fails within the warranty period. It is the most credible pet-waste avoidance claim in the category, though keeping floors reasonably clear still helps.
How often do you empty the j7+ base?
The Clean Base holds about 60 days of debris in typical homes, less with heavy-shedding pets. You replace a bag rather than emptying a bin, which keeps dust contained.
Does the Roomba j7+ mop?
No. The j7+ is vacuum-only. If mopping matters, look at the Roborock S8 or a dedicated robot mop instead.
