WiFi Router Not Working? 4 Fixes (2026)

Router dropping connections or no internet? Four common causes and how to fix each one.

Most router problems come from a short list of causes. Work through these fixes in order before considering a replacement.

No internet on any device

Check the modem first: if its lights show no connection, the issue is the ISP, not the router. Power-cycle modem, wait two minutes, then router. If the modem is fine, check the WAN cable and try a different Ethernet cable.

WiFi keeps dropping

Interference is the usual suspect. Move the router away from microwaves and baby monitors, switch congested devices to 5 GHz, and try a different WiFi channel in the router settings. A firmware update often helps.

Slow speeds on WiFi but fast on cable

Test next to the router to isolate range from speed. If fast nearby, reposition the router centrally and elevated. Old devices stuck on 2.4 GHz drag the network; move capable devices to 5 GHz.

Router needs frequent reboots

Overheating or failing hardware is likely. Ensure ventilation, update firmware, and check for a scheduled reboot option as a stopgap. If it persists, the router is dying.

Questions, answered

How often should I reboot my router?

Modern routers should not need it. If weekly reboots are required, something is wrong.

Will a factory reset help?

As a last resort, yes. Back up your settings first, then reset and reconfigure cleanly.
