Wireless Charger Buying Guide (2026)

How to choose a wireless charger: MagSafe vs Qi, charging speeds, alignment, heat, and multi-device docks.

MagSafe, Qi, and Qi2

Qi is the universal standard every modern phone supports. MagSafe adds magnets and 15W speeds for iPhones. Qi2 brings magnetic alignment to the broader Qi ecosystem, including newer Android phones. When shopping, match the standard to your phone: iPhone users get the most from MagSafe or Qi2, while standard Qi suffices for overnight charging on any device.

Speed: what the numbers mean

Advertised wattage is a ceiling, not a promise. Your phone negotiates the actual rate, and iPhones cap non-MagSafe wireless at 7.5W while Galaxies need compatible chargers for 15W. The wall adapter matters enormously: an underpowered brick silently caps everything downstream. For the fastest results, use the adapter the manufacturer recommends.

Alignment and form factor

Misalignment is the number one cause of slow wireless charging. Magnetic chargers eliminate it entirely, which is their real advantage over raw speed. For flat pads, look for non-slip surfaces and alignment guides. Stands suit desks where you glance at notifications; flat pads suit nightstands where the phone rests undisturbed.

Heat and battery health

Wireless charging is less efficient than wired, and the lost energy becomes heat. Sustained heat degrades batteries faster, so chargers with cooling fans or conservative power curves are genuinely better for nightly use. If a pad regularly feels hot to the touch, it is working against your battery's lifespan.

Questions, answered

How fast is 15W wireless in practice?

Roughly half the speed of modern wired fast charging. Expect a full charge in two to three hours depending on the phone, versus under an hour wired.

Can wireless charging replace my cable?

For overnight and desk top-ups, yes. Keep a wired fast charger for the times you need a quick boost before heading out.

Do I need the brand's own wall adapter?

Not always, but it is the safest path to full speed. Any quality USB-C PD adapter meeting the wattage requirement usually works.

What is Qi2 and should I wait for it?

Qi2 adds magnetic alignment to the universal standard. If you are buying today for an iPhone, MagSafe gear already delivers this. Android users may find growing Qi2 accessory choices worth watching.
