3D Printer Not Working? Fixes That Actually Help
Common 3D printer problems and fixes: failed first layers, clogs, stringing, and prints not sticking.
Most 3D printer problems trace back to a short list of causes. Work through these fixes in order before assuming hardware is broken.
First layer will not stick
Clean the build plate with isopropyl alcohol, re-run bed leveling, and check nozzle height: the first layer should look slightly squashed, not round. For stubborn materials, raise bed temperature slightly or use a brim in the slicer.
Nozzle clog or under-extrusion
Heat the nozzle to printing temperature and do a cold pull with cleaning filament. Check that the extruder gear is not grinding the filament and that the PTFE tube is seated fully. Old or wet filament is a common hidden cause.
Stringing between parts
Enable or tune retraction in the slicer, and dry your filament: moisture is the top cause of stringing in PLA and PETG. Lowering nozzle temperature by 5 degrees also helps.
Layer shifting mid-print
Check belt tension and make sure nothing obstructs the motion system. Reduce print speed and acceleration for tall prints. On enclosed printers, verify the chamber is not overheating the electronics.
Questions, answered
Why did my print fail halfway?
The usual suspects are filament tangles on the spool, a clogged nozzle, or the part detaching from the bed. Check the spool first: crossed filament causes most mid-print failures.
How do I dry filament?
Use a filament dryer or a low oven, following the material's recommended temperature and time. Store opened spools in sealed bags with desiccant to prevent reabsorbing moisture.
