Drip Coffee Maker Not Brewing? Fixes That Work (2026)

Your drip coffee maker won't brew, brews slowly, or makes weak coffee. Here are the most common causes and fixes.

Most drip maker problems come down to three things: mineral scale, a clogged water path, or a failed heating element. Work through these fixes in order before assuming the machine is dead.

Machine won't turn on at all

Check the outlet with another device, then inspect the power cord for damage. Many machines have a thermal fuse that trips after overheating; unplug for 30 minutes and try again. If it stays dead, the fuse or heating element has likely failed.

Brewing very slowly or gurgling

This is almost always scale buildup. Run a full descaling cycle with white vinegar or citric acid, then two clean-water cycles. In hard-water areas, descale every one to two months to prevent recurrence.

Coffee tastes weak or watery

First check your coffee-to-water ratio and grind size. If those are right, the shower head may be partially clogged: remove it if possible and soak in vinegar. A failing heating element that can't reach temperature also causes weak extraction.

Water leaking from the base

Usually a cracked water tank, a misseated carafe, or a perished silicone tube. Inspect the tank for hairline cracks, make sure the carafe sits centered, and check that the brew basket isn't overflowing from too-fine grounds.

Questions, answered

How do I descale properly?

Fill the tank with equal parts white vinegar and water, run half a brew cycle, pause for 30 minutes, then finish the cycle. Follow with two full clean-water cycles to rinse.

When is it time to replace the machine?

If descaling doesn't restore flow or temperature, and the machine is out of warranty, replacement usually beats repair for budget models. Premium machines like the Moccamaster are worth servicing.
