Wireless Charger Not Working? 4 Fixes That Actually Help
Your wireless charger is not charging, charging slowly, or keeps stopping. Four practical fixes in order of likelihood.
Wireless charging failures are almost always alignment, power, or case interference. These four fixes resolve the vast majority of cases.
Phone is not charging at all
First, remove the case and try again; thick, metal, or wallet cases are the most common blockers. Next, verify the charger itself has power by checking its indicator light. Finally, confirm your phone actually supports wireless charging and that it is centered on the pad's sweet spot, which is not always the visual center.
Charging is very slow
Slow charging usually means a weak wall adapter or misalignment. Use the recommended adapter, ideally 20W or higher USB-C PD, since the in-box or bundled brick is often the bottleneck. With magnetic chargers, reseat the phone to confirm the snap; with flat pads, reposition until the charging indicator confirms full-rate charging.
Charging starts then stops
Intermittent charging points to shifting alignment or overheating. Make sure nothing sits between phone and pad, including metal rings, pop sockets, or credit cards, which trigger foreign-object detection. If the pad feels hot, move it somewhere ventilated and remove any case trapping heat.
Charger works with one phone but not another
Different phones negotiate different wireless standards. Check compatibility explicitly: iPhones need MagSafe or Qi2 for 15W, Galaxies need a compatible fast-wireless charger for 15W, and some phones are picky about pad coil placement. A charger that is perfect for one ecosystem may be merely adequate for another.
Questions, answered
Why does my phone get hot on the charger?
Some warmth is normal due to energy loss. Excessive heat usually means misalignment or a case trapping warmth; reposition the phone and try without the case.
Can a software update break wireless charging?
Rarely, but it happens: updates occasionally change charging behavior. If charging broke right after an update, check the phone maker's support forums before replacing hardware.
