Monitor Not Displaying? 4 Fixes to Try
Monitor shows no signal or stays black? Four researched fixes covering cables, inputs, drivers, and power.
A blank monitor is usually a connection or input problem rather than a dead panel. Work through these fixes in order before assuming the hardware has failed.
No signal after connecting
Confirm the monitor is set to the correct input source using its on-screen menu, since monitors do not always auto-switch. Reseat both ends of the cable, and try a different cable or port: a surprising share of no-signal cases trace to a loose or faulty cable rather than the monitor or PC.
Black screen but power light is on
Raise brightness in case it was dimmed to zero, then test with another device such as a laptop to isolate whether the PC or the monitor is at fault. On Windows, the Win plus Ctrl plus Shift plus B shortcut restarts the graphics driver without rebooting.
Display works but resolution is wrong
Set the display to its native resolution in your OS display settings, then set the refresh rate to the panel's maximum. If the native resolution is missing, update the GPU driver, since generic drivers often hide the correct modes.
Monitor will not power on at all
Try a different power outlet and a different power cable if the brick is external. Unplug the monitor for a full minute to drain residual charge, then reconnect. If the power LED stays dark across outlets and cables, the power supply has likely failed and needs service.
Questions, answered
Can a bad HDMI cable cause no display?
Yes. Damaged or out-of-spec cables are one of the most common causes of no-signal and flicker issues. Swapping in a known-good cable is the fastest diagnostic step.
Why does my monitor work with one PC but not another?
The usual culprits are GPU driver issues, an unsupported resolution or refresh rate set on the non-working PC, or a port standard mismatch such as an older HDMI version. Booting the problem PC into safe mode often reveals a usable picture for diagnosis.
